Dev Blog #17: Contracts

Welcome to Dev Blog #17! Contracts are here: a simple-looking feature with some big consequences for how Pactoria's politics play out.

At a glance

  • Write a title and terms, then everyone involved signs in person
  • Signatures can be withdrawn until the contract is sealed, never after
  • Make copies with /contract duplicate
  • A broken contract can become a casus belli

How they work

Craft a blank contract in game and open it: you'll find space for a title and the terms. Once those are written, the contract is ready to be signed.

  • Every player can only sign with their own name, so nobody can sign on someone else's behalf.
  • You have to be holding the contract to sign it, which means you need to be there in person.
  • Until the contract is sealed, anyone who signed can still withdraw their signature.
  • Once everyone has signed and it's sealed, there's no going back.
  • You can see the names of everyone who signed at any time.

Duplicates

Need a copy? Hold the contract in your main hand and paper in your off hand, then run:

/contract duplicate

Why it matters

A sealed contract is a promise everyone involved can point back to. Treaties, alliances, trade deals, land agreements, ceasefires: all of it can now be made official inside the world itself. Since a sealed contract can't be changed, there's no arguing later about who agreed to what.

It also means promises carry weight. Depending on the situation, a broken contract can be the reason for a casus belli and can lead all the way to war, so think carefully about what you sign, and who you sign it with.

The bigger picture

Contracts make players actually be there: in game, holding the contract, meeting face to face. That encourages real roleplay instead of random docs passed around on Discord that can be edited or faked.

It's another layer of immersion for Pactoria, and even more room for geopolitical drama.

See you in the next one!
